Who Are the San
Luis Obispo County Greens?
The SLO
Greens are part of the state, national and global Green movement. The
rapidly growing SLO Green local has currently 2,600 registered voters.
Greens have been elected to the city councils in San Luis Obispo and Morro Bay. They are
currently serving on commissions in SLO county, the city of San Luis
Obispo, Arroyo Grande and
Morro Bay.
In addition to running or supporting Green candidates in elections, we
emphasize grassroots activism.
Issues we are or have been involved in include:
- Fighting
corporate irresponsibility (the World Trade Organization, Unocal,
Pacific Gas & Electric, Duke Energy)
- Demonstrating
against the death penalty, U.S. foreign policy and the so-called
wars on terrorism and drugs
- Preservation of the Morro Bay estuary and
extension of the Marine Sanctuary to include the San Luis Obispo
coastline
- Banning of vehicles on our beaches and dunes and
greater protection of our costs
- Stopping urban sprawl and air pollution
We circulated petitions for a ballot initiative to amend the Three
Strikes law. We support prison reform. We are against the
inhumane treatment of animals in circuses and rodeos.
We oppose the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant and it's wastes.
We have been a presence at local diversity and gay rights events.
We are active in developing and supporting local alternative media.
We are proud that Ralph Nader was so impressed with our platform that
he ran twice for president on the Green ticket. His candidacy
focused attention on the Green Party. We continue forging a
viable third party by advocating electoral reform through Instant
Runoff Voting (IRV), proportional
representation and public
financing of campaigns at all levels of government.
